12 Missions of Xmas

We’re back with our 12 Missions of Xmas challenge to encourage your team to do good in the lead-up to the festive season. Running from the 6 November to 15 December, we have loads of ways to engage your team, covering the key causes they care about.

Great causes, curated for you

We’ll cover 5 of the biggest topics affecting us as a society today: homelessness, children in need, poverty, loneliness, and climate change.

Join us in promoting these causes to your team or pick and choose the weeks that matter the most to your organisation.

Rewarding teams with real prizes

Get those competitive streaks in line, because we’re gearing up for the biggest challenge yet with fantastic sustainability prizes for those who do the most!

And that’s not all! Everyone who completes any 12 missions or pledges during this time period will also be rewarded with 12 trees 🌳 being planted in their company forest.

Week 1: Help Fight Homelessness, 6 - 12 November

💻 Join us for a very special live webinar with Crisis, OnHand and Oxfordshire Homeless to discuss the complexities of homelessness - hear views from a nationwide organisation and perspectives from the frontline. Gain insights and actions to support this very important issue. Live on the 9th of November at 11.30am Sign up here.

Also during the week, pick up the following actions on the OnHand app:

🏠 Familiarise yourself with local homeless shelters & soup kitchens
🧥 Donate your old coat to Wrap Up or Crisis
☕️ Buy a coffee or a meal for a person experiencing homelessness
🗣 Have a chat with a person experiencing homelessness
📦 Set up a company-wide warm clothes donation drive
🧶 Create a team big knit to make hats & gloves
🤝 Host a big sleepout

Week 2: Support Children in Need, 13 - 19 November

Children make up less than one-third of the global population, but accounted for more than 41% among the world’s refugees in 2022, amounting to over 35 million displaced children. On top of that, 356 million children live in extreme poverty.

Heres How You Can Help:

🎄Make festive cards for Cards for Bravery as a team or as an individual
🎁 Set up a community shoebox donation
🧒 Become a mentor for a child refugee
✍️ Write letters to refugees
💙 Start your youth mentoring journey helping underrepresented children

Week 3: Prevent Poverty, 20 - 26 November

In 2022, more than 1 in 5 people in the UK were living in poverty. With the cost of living crisis making this a hard-hitting holiday period for a lot of people, food banks expect that they’ll have to provide more than 7,000 parcels a day this December to families in need.

To help those living in poverty, you can:

🌡 Raise awareness of warm banks in your community
🥫 Donate to your local food bank
💡 Learn more about poverty with our educational bite-sze talks
📦 Set up a food donation drive
💙 Donate hygiene & period products
🎁 Create shoebox care packages

Week 4: Tackle Loneliness, 27 November - 3 December

One million people in the UK go for over a month without speaking to anyone at all, and over 400,000 adults dread Xmas for this reason. This holiday season spread some warmth and community.

💻 We’ll be kick-starting the week with a companionship training season, which will be open to all OnHanders to learn how to have a great call. Leave the session feeling confident to pick up the phone with tips and tricks for speaking to someone who is isolated or experiencing loneliness. Dates coming soon!

Also during the week, pick up the following actions on the OnHand app:

📝 Send a Xmas card to a neighbour
☎️ Pick up a befriending phone call
💡 Listen to a bite-sized talk to better understand loneliness
💙 Bring a mince pie to a neighbour
😸 Look after the furry friends for those in the hospital
🐕 Set up pet companionship

Week 5: Have an Eco Xmas, 4 - 10 December

Did you know that we produce 15 times more waste (in food, plastic, cardboard, aluminium, and other products) at Xmas than any other time of year? With over 125,000 tonnes of JUST plastic waste produced around the holiday, why not try to have an eco Xmas? You can reduce the amount of waste you create while still having an amazing Xmas.

Give these actions a go on the OnHand app:

🎁 Buy second-hand or make your own gifts
🥦 Pledge to eat meat-free this Xmas
♻️ Use recyclable wrapping paper for presents
🎄 Buy a potted Xmas tree and replant after
🎅Do a pre-loved or handmade Secret Santa at work or with friends
💙Buy presents that are plastic-free or have minimal plastic packaging

It’s important to remember the reason we’re running 12 Missions of Xmas; we want you to get involved during one of the most difficult periods of the year, to help to those who are most in need, as well as for the good of the planet.
