Community Grocery

Task Type: Sorting Donations

We usually divide our volunteers between our Distribution Centre and our Community Grocery Store to make the most of everyone’s time and skills.

At the Distribution Centre, volunteers help with decanting, sorting, and labelling stock, ensuring everything is well-organised and ready for distribution. In the Community Grocery Store, volunteers get involved in stocking shelves, serving members, and sorting deliveries, helping to create a smooth and welcoming shopping experience.

On the day, we typically spread the team across both areas, giving everyone a chance to experience different aspects of our work and see the impact of their contribution firsthand.

Smart Works Greater Manchester

Task Type: Support With Clothing Donations

We support unemployed women by providing them with the coaching, clothing, and confidence they need to secure meaningful employment and transform their lives.

As a volunteer, you can make a real difference by helping to organise clothing donations, label and size garments, and replenish our rails to ensure every woman has access to high-quality, work-ready outfits.

It’s a great opportunity to be part of an empowering and inspiring environment, helping women take the next step toward a brighter future.

Manchester Urban Diggers (MUD)

Task Type: Community Gardening

Activities in our gardens change with the seasons and often tie into ongoing site development projects. These can include anything from building greenhouses and raised beds to laying pathways or improving garden infrastructure.

Most tasks are hands-on and focus on gardening or practical DIY work, offering volunteers the chance to learn new skills, get outdoors, and contribute to creating beautiful, sustainable spaces for the community to enjoy.

Manchester South Central Foodbank

Task Type: Foodbank

The event kicks off with a guided tour of our Hulme warehouse, where you’ll discover the urgent needs within our community and see firsthand how our work supports those facing hardship.

After the tour, teams will race against the clock in a fun and fast-paced challenge to shop for essential items, earning points along the way for completing various tasks.

This engaging and competitive experience is a fantastic way to build teamwork, boost morale, and make a real difference, helping to raise vital food and funds for those in need. And of course—the winning team will take home a special trophy!

Projects will vary throughout the year depending on the season and the needs of the site. Activities may include supporting new organic growers from our training programme, enhancing infrastructure or wildlife habitats, and assisting in the Community Garden.
Whatever the task, there will be a variety of activities suitable for all physical abilities and skill levels, offering plenty of chances to try new things, develop new skills, and enjoy a mix of rewarding work throughout the day.

Team volunteering day with The Bread and Butter Thing

Task Type: Team Mission

We offer a variety of volunteering opportunities at our three food redistribution warehouses located in Durham, Stoke, and Manchester. Volunteers play a vital role in ensuring that good food reaches the people who need it most.

Typical activities include assisting in the warehouse-helping to sort, date-check, and organise incoming food donations, as well as consolidating and preparing stock for distribution to our partner organisations.

These hands-on roles are ideal for anyone who enjoys practical work, being part of a friendly team, and making a direct impact in reducing food waste and tackling food insecurity in local communities.
